The Parsippany-Troy Hills School district includes a Computer Science introductory unit within each Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Science Curriculum. This Computer Science unit is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Computer Science and Design Thinking. Our focus is to introduce students to computer science and design thinking while engaging them in hands-on activities.

Computer Science/ Applied Technology 6-8
The Parsippany-Troy Hills School district offers a variety of elective courses at the middle school level that utilize hands-on activities and a variety of technology tools to pique student interest. Through project-based learning experiences with real world connections, students will develop problem solving skills and an understanding of the engineering and design process. Each course is one marking period, which provides students with the opportunity to take multiple courses throughout the year. Students may choose to explore different interests in the technology and the engineering fields or take a sequence of courses that provides a more in depth experience in a specific area of interest, such as robotics or coding. The Parsippany-Troy Hills School district offers a full elective program of studies in computer science including a 3-course sequence that is designed to prepare students for a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification. This certification is an information technology (IT) certification from Cisco Systems. We also offer courses in several coding languages including Python, C++, and Java. We offer a course in Robotics and further advanced study in Java, object-oriented programming, and data structures. Throughout these courses our curriculum provides students with instruction on app development, troubleshooting, program development and the engineering design process.
It is recommended that any student wishing to study computer science has a strong foundation in logical, mathematical thinking. Students need to be able to work with Algebra I topics including basic linear functions, recognition of patterns, composition of functions, and problem-solving strategies that require multiple approaches and collaborative efforts. It is important that students, parents and their advisers understand that computer science courses build upon a foundation of mathematical reasoning.
PTHSD Computer Science Course Sequences
Starting with freshman year, students will have the option of choosing from Robotics, Networks, Intro to Computer Programming with Python, Programming in C++ *, or AP Computer Science Principles*. Depending on their freshman year course, students will have several possible pathways of study. Applied Technology 9-12
Parsippany Troy Hills offers a variety of electives in the Applied Technology department from Woods Technology to Engineering CAD to Television Production. New to the 2021-2022 school year students can take our Engineering CAD class to prepare for the Onshape Associate Certification exam which will be taken at the end of the course. This certification is industry recognized and helps students gain a solid foundation of a currently utilized 3-D modeling program in the workforce. Also, coming soon is our new Fundamentals of Engineering course where students will be afforded the opportunity to further develop their 3D modeling skills, work with a variety of technology tools and hone their understanding of the engineering and design process, while at the same time potentially earning college credit through our dual enrollment program with NJIT. These two courses help prepare our future engineers with the technology foundations for college and the workforce. Additionally we offer Woods Technology 1 and 2, Home Technology Systems, Maintenance and Repair and Auto Fundamentals and Mechanics to help students prepare for the trades, as well as gain the hands-on skills needed in the engineering world.
